A Steam write error occurs whenever Steam is unable to download game data and save it to your computer’s storage drive during an update or reinstallation. It usually accompanied by one of the following error messages:

steam disk write error

An Error can Occur if:

  • The Steam drive or folder is write-protected.
  • There are defects on the hard drive.
  • Your antivirus or firewall is preventing Steam from downloading and saving data.
  • The Steam directory contains corrupt or outdated files.

How to Fix Steam Disk Write Error

If you have an error write the Steam disc, try the following:

  • Restart Steam. The easiest way to rule out a temporary problem is to close the Steam client, reopen it, and then download or replay it.
  • Restart the computer. If closing and reopening, Steam doesn’t solve the problem, restarting the PC can fix it by shutting down any running processes that could be disrupting Steam.
  • Remove the write protection from the drive. Write protection prevents a computer from adding or changing files to an entire folder or drive. If you think this is the source of the problem, check which drive your Steam games are stored on, then remove the write protection from that drive.
  • Turn off the read-only setting for the Steam folder. If the Steam directory is read-only, the entire directory is read-only. Go to the Steam folder properties and make sure the read-only setting is not selected.
  • Run Steam as an administrator. Running software as an administrator gives you extra privileges and can fix various strange problems.
  • Delete damaged files. If an error occurs while downloading a game through Steam, it can create a corrupt file that causes an error while write a Steam disc. To fix this problem, go to the main Steam folder and open the steam apps / common directory. If you see a file with the same name as the game you want to play and its size is 0 KB, delete it and try downloading or starting the game again.
  • Check the integrity of the game files. Right-click the game in your Steam Library and choose Properties. Then go to the Local Files tab and select Verify Game Files Integrity. If Steam finds damaged files, it will automatically replace them.
  • If your game uses a launcher that downloads additional updates, don’t do this step. When you do this, your updated game will replace it with the base launcher. You will then need to download the updates again using the launcher.
  • Clear the Steam download cache. If the Steam download cache corrupted, it can lead to hard drive write errors. To fix this problem, open Steam and go to Steam> Settings> Downloads> Clear Download Cache.
  • Move Steam to another drive. In several times, there may be a problem with the drive preventing Steam from write to it. If you have multiple drives or partitions, move the Steam installation folder to another drive. If this step fixes the Steam disc write error, check the original drive for errors.
  • Check the drive for errors. In some cases, this process can recognize bad sectors and tell Windows to ignore those sectors in the future. If the problem persists or gets worse, you may need to replace the hard drive.
  • Disable the antivirus or add exceptions. In rare cases, antivirus programs can incorrectly identify Steam as a threat and prevent game data from being downloaded and saved. If the error while write to the Steam hard drive goes away with the antivirus turned off, add Steam’s exception in the antivirus scans.
  • Disable the firewall or add Asunaadd. Therefore, If temporarily turning off the firewall resolves the problem, add an exception to the Windows firewall.
  • Contact Steam for assistance. Steam’s technical support team can guide you through possible solutions to your specific problem. You can also find help on the Steam Community Forum.
